How many times have you heard a child or remember asking yourself 'What does God look like?'

God the Father is a spirit according to John 4:24 and cannot be seen, at least by the natural eye. Moses wanted to see God and God told him “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” (Exodus 33:20) Moses tried and his flesh actually glowed with a holy radiance after being in the presence of the Almighty and caused those who saw him to be afraid of him. An unholy man cannot look upon a holy God in His sinless glory and survive.

The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel tried to describe Him…“Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.” (1:26-28)

John in the New Testament book of Revelation wrote “His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength” (1:14-16). It’s with descriptive words and phrases “like”, “what appeared like” “like the appearance" “he looked like” "the appearance of" etc. that God is described in His word. Why?...

Because the 'finite' world of words cannot describe the 'infinite' reality of an eternal God! Although God in spirit form cannot be seen with our human eyes He can most certainly be observed in His “essence” in the person of His son who said, "he that hath seen me hath seen the Father" in John 14:9b and in the things we observe of His creation…

I say...

He’s as beautiful as a moonlit sky overlooking a sea of glass…

He’s as gentle as the touch of a newborn babe and as quiet as the rhythm of a heart at rest…

He’s as soft as the down of a pheasant’s breast and as great as the Tetons in their winter’s nest…

He’s as far away as our imagination can take us, and yet He’s as close as the whisper of His name!

So, what does God look like?...

That’s for each of us to decide! ❤
